GREENSBURG, Pa. – Travis Denman's two-run single in the top of the seventh gave the West Liberty University baseball team a 4-3 win against No. 10 Seton Hill Saturday afternoon in the second game of a West Virginia Conference doubleheader. The host Griffins had rallied to a 9-4 victory in the opener.
In the second game, Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (17-15, 15-8) scored all four of their runs in the final two innings to overcome a 3-0 deficit.
Tim Mirandy started West Liberty on the comeback trail with a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Seton Hill (29-9, 19-4), ranked No. 10 in the most recent National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) NCAA Division II poll, got out of the inning with no further damage but the Hilltoppers weren't finished.
After the Griffins failed to score in the bottom of the sixth, the West Liberty bats went right back to work. An error and back-to-back singles by Anthony Pierro and D.J. Busby loaded the bases with one out before Denman ripped what proved to be a game-winning two-run single up the middle to give the Hilltoppers a 4-3 lead.
Josh Graham closed the game with a perfect seventh inning to pick up the save. Mark Smyth worked the first six innings to earn the win, giving up three runs in the bottom of the fourth but holding the nationally-ranked hosts in check the rest of the way. Busby, Pierro and Andrew Henry each smacked out a pair of singles to pace a 10-hit attack.
In the opener, West Liberty jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a three-run home run by Jon-Michael Brunner in the top of the second inning but SHU answered with five runs in the bottom of the third and three more in the bottom of the fourth to win going away.
Brunner closed out the Hilltopper scoring with a solo homer in the top of the sixth. Mirandy had a multi-hit game with a double and a single.
The teams return to the Greensburg diamond on Sunday for another 1 p.m. doubleheader.
