WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. –
Art Hobley and
Danny Doyle posted convincing wins for the West Liberty University wrestling team Tuesday night but it wasn't enough to prevent Coach
Brian Davis's short-handed mat squad from dropping a 40-6 verdict to Shippensburg at the ASRC.
With several starters sidelined by injuries, the Hilltoppers (4-8) had to send a patchwork lineup onto the mat to challenge the visiting Raiders (11-6).
Shippensburg, ranked No. 6 in the latest Super Region One poll, jumped out quickly with three technical falls and a major decision in the first four matches.
Hobley tried to stop the bleeding with a 9-2 decision against Mark Lentz at 157 pounds but the Raiders posted back-to-back pins at 165 and 174 to put the match out of reach.
Doyle put West Liberty's final points on the board with a 10-3 decision against Francis Slover at 197 pounds.
The Hilltoppers' meat-grinder schedule continues this weekend with a 7 p.m. dual at Findlay (Ohio) on Friday before heading to Tiffin (Ohio) for a 7 p.m. dual on Saturday.
