WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – West Liberty University wrestling coach
Brian Davis was hard at work restocking the Hilltoppers' cupboard during the off-season as the Black and Gold mat boss has added 11 new faces to the West Liberty roster.
“This is by far the largest group we've brought in since my arrival at West Liberty five years ago,” Davis said. “In addition to their wrestling ability, academic performance and character are two things we value most when looking at prospective student-athletes. We feel strongly that this group possesses all of these qualities and we're very excited to see what the future holds for these young men.”
Here's a look at the Hilltoppers' 2012 wrestling recruits:
Eric Antesberger (North Pole (AK) High School/Del Mar (Texas) CC): Projected 157-pounder was an Alaska Class AAAA state runner-up as a sophomore and state champion as a junior but missed the state tournament due to injury as a senior. Posted an 87-21 high school record. Returning to the mat after two-year layoff while attending a Texas junior college that did not have a wrestling team.
Zach Brown (Oak Glen (WV) High School): Projected 125-pounder was 125-20 for the perennial Mountain State power Golden Bears. Was a two-time OVAC champion and 2012 West Virginia Class A/AA state champion. Earned state runner-up honors as a sophomore and junior.
Daniel Carpenter (Liberty Raleigh (WV) High School): Projected 141-pounder posted a 122-36 career record at the southern West Virginia school. Placed in the state tournament each of his last two years, finishing third as a junior and fifth as a senior.
Joe Congie (Chartiers-Houston (PA) High School): Projected 184-pounder turned in a strong 33-13 record as a senior for the Western Pennsylvania school. Finished sixth in the 2012 WPIAL Championships. Posted an 84-31 career record on the Western Pennsylvania mats.
Bryce Gainer (Parkersburg South (WV) High School): Projected 125-pounder had an impressive 157-35 career record with the Patriots. Was a three-time West Virginia Class AAA runner-up and finished second or third in three straight OVAC Tournaments.
Kodiac Garcia (Wheeling Park (WV) High School): Projected 157-pounder was 50-24 in two varsity seasons with the Ohio County Patriots. Two-time West Virginia Class AAA placer (sixth as a sophomore, fifth as a senior) and placed fourth in the OVAC Tournament as a senior. Missed entire junior season with a football injury.
Cole Nace (Teays Valley (OH) High School): Projected 141-pounder posted a 130-40 career mark at Ohio Division I school. Finished 8
th at the Ohio state meet as a senior with a 34-8 record.
Bryan Skoff (Bridgeport (OH) High School/Mount Union): Projected 157-pounder was a two-year starter at Mount Union after an outstanding high school career. Had a 156-31 career record at Bridgeport HS. Was a four-time OVAC placer and OVAC champion as a senior. Two-time Ohio state placer (fourth as a junior, seventh as a senior).
Micah Skubon (Washington (WV) High School): Projected 197-pounder had a 141-68 career record at his Eastern Panhandle school. Won Class AAA regional title and placed third in the state as a senior with a 41-10 mark.
Doug Sizemore (William Monroe (VA) High School): Projected 197-pounder was a three-time district champion with a 111-52 high school record. Virginia state runner-up at 195 pounds as a senior. Talented running back ran for 1,713 yards and 19 TDs to help football team to first state playoff berth in a decade.
DeMadre Turner (Huntington (WV) High School: Projected 157-pounder posted an 88-34 career mark for the Highlanders. A two-time West Virginia Class AAA placer (third as a junior, sixth as a senior), he also won the MSAC 152-pound championship as a senior.
