Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team closed out its home schedule on Wednesday by splitting a high-scoring doubleheader with Concord.
Coach Bo McConnaughy's Hilltoppers notched a walk-off 8-7 win in the opener before coming up short in a 16-7 slugfest in the finale.
West Liberty (10-28, 7-21) jumped on the Mountain Lions (21-26, 17-15) quickly in the opener, pushing seven runs across the plate in the first two innings to grab a commanding 7-0 lead.
Concord chipped away steadily at the margin, however, and finally managed to knot the score at 7-7 with a single tally in the top of the seventh.
The Hilltoppers wasted little time putting together the winning rally in the bottom of the frame.
With one out, Brian Castilow beat out an infield single and moved to second when
Dillon Mangino drew a walk.
Andrew Henry then greeted the Concord reliever with a ringing double to left, plating Castilow with the game-winner.
Mangino had three singles and an RBI while picking up the win in relief.
Travis Denman homered and doubled to chase home three runs while
Taylor Snare,
Hayden Mobley and Castilow all chipped with one hit and an RBI.
The Mountain Lions slammed three home runs and scored in every inning but the fourth in winning the nightcap.
Leading the hit parade for West Liberty was
Mike Johnson with a home run and a single and Mobley with a two-run circuit blast. Denman weighed in with a two-run single while Castilow added an RBI base knock.
The Hilltoppers finish the season against Ohio County rival Wheeling Jesuit at the I-470 Complex this weekend, facing the Cardinals in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday before wrapping things up on Sunday with a 1 p.m. nine-inning game.
