Box Score WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's basketball team picked up its third win in the last four games Monday night, rolling to a 66-49 victory against Ohio Valley University in West Virginia Conference action at the ASRC.
Although the game was less than an artistic success at times, Coach Lynn Ullom's Hilltoppers (12-9, 9-6) led wire-to-wire in beating the Fighting Scots (10-13, 6-11) for the 31st straight time while strengthening their hold on a spot in the top half of the WVIAC standings.
“I think anybody associated with our program knows we still have a lot of work to do in order to get where we want to go this season,” Ullom said, “but the No. 1 objective is to get the win and we did enough good things tonight to get that done.”
Kayla Ayers opened the game with a 3-pointer and West Liberty controlled the action for much of the first half, relying on a tenacious defense to slowly build a 27-16 lead at intermission.
The second half began just like the first, with another Ayers 3-pointer, and the rout was on.
The Hilltopper lead never dropped below double-figures again and the hosts led by as many as 24 points down the stretch in posting their largest victory margin of the season.
Ayers drained a season-high 6 3-point field goals and finished with a game-high 20 points. Hillary Southworth added 13 and 7 rebounds while Emily Blevins chipped in with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Dakeisha Mann had 19 points and 10 rebounds for OVU while Tara Benedict added 14 points off the bench.
The West Liberty women hit the road Thursday night with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff at Pitt-Johnstown.
