VIENNA, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's basketball team closed out the second extra period on an 11-2 run Thursday night to escape the Snyder Activities Center with a 77-69 double-overtime victory against Ohio Valley.
Jenn Mohney tossed in a career-high 20 points and
Meghan Wiseman worked the paint for a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds as the Hilltoppers (4-2, 2-0) survived the upset bid by the host Fighting Scots (0-3, 0-1).
West Liberty appeared to have things well in hand in the early going, leading by as many as 15 points in the first half before settling for a 28-15 margin at intermission.
The Hilltoppers struggled to find the range in the second half, however, and OVU rallied to take its first lead of the night, 45-44, on a 3-pointer by Amy Brooks with just over 4 minutes left in regulation.
The lead swung back and forth down the stretch with Wiseman giving West Liberty a 53-51 lead with two free throws at the 31-second mark only to see the Scots' Jasmine Gibson answer with a strong post move to send the game into overtime.
Brooks opened the first overtime period with another 3-pointer and Ohio Valley still led, 63-60, after Amy Way tossed in a pair of foul tosses with just 22 seconds to play.
Hillary Southworth, who had been held to just 3 points in regulation, buried her second 3-pointer of the overtime period at the 11-second mark and then blocked Brooks' 3-point attempt at the buzzer to force a second extra frame.
After a series of lead changes,
Emily Blevins put WLU ahead to stay, 68-67, when she cashed in a feed from Southworth at 3:29.
Southworth then hit Mohney on a breakaway that resulted in a 3-point play when Mohney was fouled while making the layup. Wiseman pushed the lead to 73-67 with a power move on the blocks and the Hilltoppers were on their way.
Blevins backed Mohney and Wiseman with 14 points and 8 rebounds while Southworth finished just 4-of-22 from the floor but made both of her 3-point attempts in overtime and tied for game-high honors with 6 assists.
Way paced OVU with 18 points while Brooks (15 points, 12 rebounds) and Tara Benedict (11 points, 11 rebounds) had double-doubles in a losing cause.
The West Liberty women return home to host West Virginia State on Tuesday. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at the ASRC.
