WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – With three challenging home matches on tap this weekend, the No. 14-ranked West Liberty University wrestling team will take advantage of the opportunity to welcome former members of the Hilltopper wrestling program back to campus.
The WLU wrestling team's Alumni Weekend gets under way on Friday when Coach Brian Davis's Hilltoppers (10-3) take on No. 16-ranked Findlay in a 7 p.m. match. Action continues Saturday afternoon with a triangular involving the Hilltoppers, No. 8-ranked Mercyhurst and Tiffin.
Wrestling begins at 1 p.m. Saturday when Mercyhurst and Tiffin square off. West Liberty and Tiffin hit the mat at 2:30 p.m. with Mercyhurst and the Hilltoppers closing out the event at 4 p.m.
West Liberty wrestling alumni attending the Friday night match with Findlay are asked to assemble in the lobby of Blatnik Hall at 6:30 p.m. All former WLU wrestlers in attendance will be recognized just before the start of the match. Hilltopper wrestling alums attending the Saturday session should meet in the lobby of Blatnik Hall at 2 p.m. They will be recognized prior to the start of the Mercyhurst match.
This season's West Liberty lineup features a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers with national tournament experience. Junior Nick Wykoff, a 2009 national qualifier who missed the 2010 season while fulfilling military obligations, is No. 3 in the nation at 141 pounds. Senior JD Ramsey, a two-time national qualifier, ranks No. 6 nationally at 285 pounds. They're joined by 157-pound senior Jarrod Shaw, who earned a spot in last year's NCAA Division II championship meet.
Findlay should present a stiff test on Friday night as the Oilers feature a trio of nationally-ranked wrestlers led by defending national champion Michael Lybarger, currently No. 2 at 165 pounds. Joining Lybarger in the Findlay lineup are Adam Walters, No. 6 at 184 pounds, and Ben Sergent, No. 8 at 125 pounds.
Tiffin is in just its second year as a varsity program but the Dragons have some talented competitors, especially in the upper weight classes, and bring a 2-4 dual record into this weekend's action.
Saturday's finale against Mercyhurst figures to be quite a challenge for the Black-and-Gold. The Lakers also feature a former national champion in 2009 titlist Josh Shields. Currently ranked No. 3 in the nation at 174 pounds, Shields is making an impressive comeback after missing the 2010 season due to injury. His younger brother, Jordan Shields, earned All-America honors at last year's national tournament and is currently ranked No. 6 nationally at 157 pounds. The Shields brothers are joined by veteran Fred Hale, the nation's No. 6-ranked 285-pounder, in a formidable lineup.
