Wallace, Peters, Cater Win Top WVIAC Football Awards

(PRINCETON, W.Va)---Unbeaten Shepherd University made a clean sweep of the 2006 West Virginia Conference football awards as voted on by league head coaches.  Running back Dervon Wallace was named the league's Offensive Player of the Year.  Safety Dan Peters earns top defensive honors for a second straight season.  Head coach Monte Cater was recognized by his peers with an eighth WVIAC Coach of the Year award.

Wallace leads the WVIAC and is 13th nationally with 113.4 rush yards per game.  His 15 touchdowns also pace the conference.  The Lusby, Maryland junior was a two-time WVIAC Offensive Player of the Week.  Wallace went over the 100-yard mark five times, including a season-high 196 yards in a key Northeast Region victory over C.W. Post.

The junior running back stands sixth all-time in WVIAC history with 288 points.  His 162 points in 2005 established a new league record.  Wallace also recently became the 17th player in West Virginia Conference annals to go over the 3000-yard plateau in rushing yardage with 3001 career yards.

Peters is the leader of a Shepherd defense that tops the NCAA Division II ranks in scoring defense and total defense.  The Cresson, PA senior's nine interceptions helped the Rams post six shutouts.  He picked off passes in seven of SU's ten victories, including a three-interception effort in a 14-0 blanking of rival Shippensburg.  The senior standout stands second on the Shepherd and WVIAC career list with 27 interceptions, only two short of former Ram Jason Johnson's record of 29.

Cater edged out West Virginia State's Earl Monroe and West Liberty State's Roger Waialae to claim the top league coaching honor.  The all-time WVIAC leader in victories with a 139-68-1 mark in 20 years at Shepherd, Cater has engineered 28 consecutive regular season wins and 23 straight league triumphs.  His ten WVIAC titles is also a league record for a coach.

The 1971 Millikin University graduate owns an overall record 170-91-2 in 26 seasons.  The Rams' current #5 national ranking is the highest-ever for a West Virginia Conference squad during the league's tenure in NCAA Division II.  SU's back-to-back unbeaten, untied regular seasons are a first in league history.

League champion Shepherd recorded nine first team All-WVIAC selections.  West Liberty State followed with seven, while Fairmont State had six and Glenville State saw five honorees.

Eleven players were repeat selections from last year's first team, including three-time honorees Tavon McGee (Glenville State), Wendell Johnson (Fairmont State), Ricky Schmitt (Shepherd), and Peters.  Schmitt won accolades as both a kicker and punter for a second consecutive year.
