BOX SCORE
BECKLEY, W.Va. – West Virginia Wesleyan scored 10 runs in the final three innings against a depleted West Liberty pitching staff Sunday morning to hand the Hilltoppers a season-ending 14-3 defeat in the rain-marred West Virginia Conference Tournament.

The WLU-Wesleyan pool play finale had been originally scheduled for Saturday night but rain forced the teams to wait until Sunday morning to take the field at Linda K. Epling Stadium.

The Bobcats scored 14 runs on 18 hits but 10 of those runs and 13 of the hits were bunched over the final three frames against a parade of West Liberty hurlers. The seven pitchers employed by the Hilltoppers during the 8-inning contest combined for 5 strikeouts and 5 walks.

Wesleyan struck first with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first but West Liberty answered in the bottom of the frame when Rudy Nagy ripped a 2-run single into the left-centerfield gap.

The Bobcats added single tallies in the third and fourth frames but led just 4-2 before breaking the game open with a 5-run uprising in the sixth inning.

Derek Daugherty had two doubles for West Liberty while Mike Johnson added a pair of singles and an RBI. Trent Chapman also had a multi-hit game with a single and double as the Hilltoppers finished with 11 hits.

Pool champions Concord and West Virginia State were scheduled to meet in a single 9-inning championship game at 1 p.m. Sunday with the winner earning the league's automatic bid to this month's NCAA Division II regional.
