SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock completed a weekend sweep of the West Liberty baseball team Sunday afternoon with a pair of wins at Jack Critchfield Park.
The Rock (14-8) came out on top at the end of two well-played games by scores of 3-1 and 5-1.
In the opener, the Hilltoppers (5-17) tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth on doubles by
Rudy Nagy and
Mike Johnson but Slippery Rock's Adam Jury broke the tie with a 2-run double in the bottom of the fifth to lift the hosts. It was the 800th career victory for The Rock's veteran head coach, Jeff Messer.
Alex Triantafillo took the hard-luck loss on the mound for West Liberty, striking out 8 and giving up only 2 walks in a route-going performance.
The Hilltoppers strung together a single, bunt, error and sacrifice fly to grab an early 1-0 lead in the second game but The Rock went ahead with 2 runs in the third inning and added 3 more insurance tallies in the fourth to put the game out of reach.
Zane Madden led West Liberty with a pair of doubles while Nagy had a single and double in a losing cause.
The Hilltoppers will be idle on Monday before hitting the road for a 1 p.m. West Virginia Conference doubleheader at Davis & Elkins on Tuesday.
