ST. GEORGE, Utah – West Liberty University senior linebacker Clay Beeler has been invited to another post-season all-star game.
Beeler, the 2010 West Virginia Conference's Defensive Player of the Year, will be heading to Utah next month to play in the inaugural Dixie Gridiron Classic. The game is scheduled for Feb. 5 at Hansen Stadium on the campus of Dixie State College.
The Hilltopper standout will be joining approximately 90 NCAA Division I and I-AA standouts from the Pac 10, Big 12, Mountain West, WAC, Conference USA, Big Sky and Pioneer Conferences in the showcase event, which will pit the Pacific States All-Stars against the Mountain States All-Stars.
The 6-3, 225-pound Beeler will be playing for the Mountain States All-Stars under the guidance of Weber State head coach Ron McBride and former Dixie State College coach Greg Croshaw. The Pacific States All-Stars will be coached by Roy Shivers, a former NFL running back and long-time Canadian Football League coach and general manager who now serves as Director of Player Personnel for the CFL's British Columbia Lions.
This will be Beeler's second post-season all-star game. He was the leading tackler in last month's 16th annual All-American Bowl in Minneapolis, Minn., helping his Stars All-Star team pitch a 13-0 shutout against the Stripes All-Stars.
A three-time All-WVIAC selection, Beeler capped his career this past fall by winning the WVIAC Defensive Player of the Year Award after leading the conference in tackles per game (9.1). Beeler's career-high 18-tackle day in a late-season win at Seton Hill was the highest single-game total in the league this season and one of the top 10 efforts nationwide. The three-year starter also earned repeat All-Region honors from Daktronics and the Don Hansen Football Gazette after finishing his career as one of the five leading tacklers in West Liberty history.
