Makenzy Johnson enters her third season as head coach of the West Liberty University volleyball program following one of the most successful seasons in school history.
Johnson guided the Hilltoppers to an 18-13 overall record and a 10-4 Mountain East Conference mark in 2025, leading West Liberty to its first-ever MEC North Division championship. The Hilltoppers also advanced to the MEC Tournament semifinals after earning the program's first North Division title, while Johnson's squad produced All-MEC, All-Region and Academic All-America recognition. Through her first two seasons on the hilltop, Johnson owns a 33-28 overall record and an impressive 19-9 conference record.
In her debut season in 2024, Johnson led West Liberty to a 15-15 overall record and a 9-5 mark in MEC play, finishing second in the MEC North Division and earning a berth in the Mountain East Conference Tournament.
Johnson initially joined the Hilltopper volleyball staff as a graduate assistant coach during the 2023-24 academic year before being elevated to the head coaching position.
A native of Chesterfield, Virginia, Johnson played collegiate volleyball at Norfolk State University (2018-20), the University of Charleston (2020-21) and Virginia State University (2021-22).
Throughout her collegiate career, she totaled 128 kills, 1,269 assists, 103 service aces, 475 digs, five blocks and 234 points, showcasing her versatility and leadership on the court.
In addition to her collegiate playing experience, Johnson has built an extensive coaching background through positions with Coastal Volleyball Club, Vantage Volleyball Club and Richmond Volleyball Club.
Johnson earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Virginia State University and a master's degree in Education with a concentration in Sports Leadership and Coaching from West Liberty University.
Makenzy is the daughter of Felicia and Derrick Johnson and comes from a strong athletic family. Her sister, Kendall Johnson, was a standout volleyball player at Shippensburg University, while her father, Derrick Johnson, played collegiate football at Kent State University. She resides in Wheeling.
