Biography
Prior to WLU: Spent two seasons at Marshall University after beginning his collegiate career at the University of Alabama. Appeared in three games for the Crimson Tide during the 2023-24 season as Alabama advanced to the NCAA Final Four. After redshirting during the 2022-23 campaign, Spears was a member of Alabama teams that won the SEC regular-season and tournament championships, earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen. He transferred to Marshall for the 2024-25 season and appeared in 13 games while helping the Thundering Herd post a 20-13 record. During the 2025-26 season, he played in 15 games as Marshall finished 19-13. A three-time collegiate letterwinner, Spears earned SEC Academic Honor Roll recognition at Alabama and was named to both the Dean's List and President's List at Marshall.
High School: Played at Bishop Canevin High School in Pittsburgh, Pa., under head coach Gino Palmosina. Helped lead the Crusaders to back-to-back WPIAL Class 1A championships in 2021 and 2022 and a PIAA Class 1A state championship in 2022. Bishop Canevin posted a 25-4 record during his senior season after finishing 15-6 and advancing to the WPIAL playoffs in 2020-21. A two-year starter and two-year letterwinner, Spears averaged 12.0 points per game as a senior and 10.0 points per game as a junior. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2022 PIAA State Championship Game.
Off the Court: Kai is the son of Christian and Julia Spears. He has two siblings, Rainier (25) and Skyla (19). Spears is pursuing his Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree at West Liberty University.
