Chuck Haggerty enters his 13th season on the West Liberty staff this fall. The veteran coach has spent most of his time at WLU schooling the Hilltopper running backs. Jeremiah Ortiz, who rushed for 1,068 yards during the 2017 season, was merely the latest first-team All-MEC ballcarrier produced under Haggerty’s watch.
The veteran coach has developed a number of record-setting tailbacks for the Black and Gold. His most decorated pupil was Kevon Calhoun, who set school records for scoring, rushing touchdowns and touchdowns during the 2010 season. Branden Ore made his mark in 2008, rushing for 1,257 yards and 20 TDs after transferring from Virginia Tech.
Haggerty has been on the sidelines as a player and coach for more than three decades dating back to his high school days. Before making the jump to the collegiate ranks, he spent 14 seasons as an assistant coach at Buckeye Local (Ohio) High School.
A 1987 graduate of the College of Wooster, Haggerty was a three-year starter and All-Conference honoree at defensive back for the Fighting Scots.
Haggerty resides in Rayland, Ohio with his wife, Debbie, and their daughters, Brianna and Cortni.
