FROSTBURG, Md. — The West Liberty University women's soccer team battled through a physical Mountain East Conference matchup Wednesday but fell to Frostburg State, 5-0, at Bobcat Field.
The Hilltoppers, now 1-4-1 overall and 1-3 in MEC play, spent much of the match defending against a sustained Frostburg State attack. The Bobcats improved to 4-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in conference play.
Frostburg State finished with a 27-4 advantage in shots and put 13 attempts on goal. West Liberty placed two of its four shots on frame and finished with three shots in the second half.
Kaisa Vale played all 90 minutes in goal for the Hilltoppers and made seven saves.
West Liberty weathered an early offensive surge from the Bobcats, keeping the match scoreless through a stretch that included nine Frostburg State shots and three corner kicks. Vale made three saves during the early pressure before Frostburg State broke through twice in a 97-second span.
Mollie Rebuck opened the scoring at 22:37 before Rayiah Davis added another goal at 24:14 to give the Bobcats a 2-0 advantage.
The Hilltoppers continued to defend through the remainder of the first half, getting through five additional Frostburg State shots and two corners without allowing another goal. Ariana Bosh recorded West Liberty's only shot of the opening half.
West Liberty generated its best offensive stretch early in the second half. From 48:58 to 51:03, the Hilltoppers recorded three shots and a corner kick while Frostburg State still held a 2-0 lead.
Ana Conejo Perez,
Aaliyah Siegel and
Sarah Holmes each registered a shot during the sequence, with Conejo Perez and Holmes putting their attempts on goal.
Frostburg State eventually added three more goals in the second half to pull away. Vale made three additional saves during the half, but the Hilltoppers were unable to find the back of the net.
Holmes and Conejo Perez finished with West Liberty's two shots on goal, while Bosh and Siegel each added one shot.
The Hilltoppers return home Sunday when they host Davis & Elkins at the West Family Athletic Complex. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
