West Liberty Falls to Rochester in Spring Break Opener

HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The West Liberty University women's tennis team opened its spring break trip Saturday morning with a 6-1 loss to the University of Rochester at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort.

The Hilltoppers move to 1-3 on the season, while Rochester improved to 4-4.

West Liberty earned its lone team point in No. 2 singles, where Ana Sanchez delivered a strong performance with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Lilly Caldwell.

In doubles play, Rochester secured the early advantage by winning two of the three matches to claim the doubles point. The Hilltoppers' win came at No. 1 doubles, where Maria Martirosyan and Sanchita Dabas defeated Lilly Caldwell and Katie Yang, 6-3.

Rochester claimed victories at No. 2 doubles and No. 3 doubles to take the opening point of the match.

In singles competition, Martirosyan nearly earned another point for West Liberty in a tightly contested match at No. 1 singles. After dropping the opening set, she rallied to take the second before falling in a match tiebreaker 6-2, 5-7, 11-9 to Yang.

Rochester picked up additional singles victories at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 to secure the team result.

West Liberty will continue its spring break slate in Hilton Head on Sunday morning, when the Hilltoppers take on Milligan University at 8:30 a.m..
