Hilltopper of the Week: Myles Montgomery

3/10/2026 1:00:00 PM

West Liberty, W.Va. - West Liberty freshman Myles Montgomery earns this week's Hilltopper of the Week honors after leading the Hilltoppers to the 2026 Mountain East Conference Tournament Championship at WesBanco Arena.

Montgomery capped a standout weekend by being named the MEC Tournament Most Valuable Player, helping West Liberty secure its fifth conference tournament title and first since 2023.

The freshman guard played a key role throughout the Hilltoppers' three-game championship run, highlighted by his performance in the title game against Fairmont State. Montgomery finished with 13 points and three steals in the 93-88 victory as West Liberty held off a late Falcons rally to claim the championship.

His impact extended well beyond scoring. Montgomery anchored West Liberty's aggressive defensive pressure throughout the tournament, setting the tone with his energy and ability to create turnovers.

During the tournament, Montgomery set a new MEC Tournament record for steals, showcasing the disruptive defense that has become a signature part of his game.

"I always try to have a defensive mindset," Montgomery said. "We play fast and trap a lot. My teammates get the traps and sometimes the ball just finds me."

Head coach Mike Lamberti praised Montgomery's development and competitive approach as a freshman.

"Myles is wired to get better every single day," Lamberti said. "He shows up, puts the work in, and plays with tremendous energy. For a freshman to step into this environment and perform the way he has is really special."

Montgomery's strong play throughout the weekend helped West Liberty complete a remarkable run that included both the Mountain East Conference regular season and tournament championships.

With the victory, the Hilltoppers also secured their record 17th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, extending the Division II record for consecutive berths.

Montgomery and fellow freshman Cameron Williams were both named to the MEC All-Tournament Team, highlighting the impact of West Liberty's young core.

"It feels really good," Montgomery said of the MVP honor. "It's a blessing, but it's really a team effort. There are so many guys on this team who could have won that trophy."

West Liberty now turns its attention to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional, where the Hilltoppers will continue their postseason run this weekend.
