FROSTBURG, Md. — The No.7 West Liberty Hilltoppers men's basketball team hits the road Wednesday night for a key Mountain East Conference matchup at Frostburg State Bobcats men's basketball, with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. inside Bobcat Arena.
A win would be historic for the Hilltoppers (19-3, 14-1 MEC), securing a 20-win season for the 21st straight year (excluding the COVID-shortened season). West Liberty enters the week riding a nine-game winning streak and holding first place in the MEC standings.
West Liberty's numbers tell the story. The Hilltoppers rank second nationally in scoring offense (98.0 ppg) and seventh in scoring margin (+17.6) while leading the MEC in steals (12.4 spg), turnovers forced (20.5), and points off turnovers (24.7). The pressure defense has been relentless, helping WLU post a +8.0 turnover margin, one of the best marks in Division II.
Offensively, balance has been the calling card. Ten different Hilltoppers average at least 6.0 points per game, led by Jamie Muldowney (13.1 ppg), Cameron Williams (11.7), Myles Montgomery (11.0), and Dante Spadafora (10.5). West Liberty is also among the nation's leaders in assists per game (19.1) and three-point attempts, keeping constant stress on opposing defenses.
West Liberty has enjoyed sustained success in the series, owning an 18-1 all-time record against Frostburg State. Earlier this season, the Hilltoppers rolled to a 117-94 win in the ASRC, shooting better than 51 percent from the floor and knocking down 14 three-pointers.
That said, Bobcat Arena has proven tricky before. Frostburg State (12-10, 8-7 MEC) is tough at home (9-3) and boasts one of the league's most potent offenses, ranking third in the MEC at 91.4 points per game.
The Bobcats feature one of the conference's top backcourts, led by Trey Simmons (23.4 ppg) and DJ Daniel (15.9 ppg), with sharpshooter Mitch Finefrock anchoring the perimeter attack (79 made threes). Frostburg State shoots 37.5 percent from three, among the league's best, and protects the ball well, making transition defense a premium for the Hilltoppers.
