WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — For the first time in more than 16 years, the West Liberty University football team is back in the national rankings, earning the No. 23 spot in the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Coaches Poll released Monday.

The ranking marks West Liberty's first appearance in the AFCA Division II Top 25 since Week 4 of the 2010 season, with the poll released Sept. 21, 2010.

The Hilltoppers received 67 points in this week's poll after improving to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in Mountain East Conference play with a 44-22 victory at Glenville State on Saturday. West Liberty has won seven consecutive games after opening the season 0-1.

West Liberty is one of three teams to enter the AFCA Top 25 this week, joining East Stroudsburg and Grand Valley State. Ferris State remains No. 1, followed by Harding, Kutztown, Colorado State Pueblo and Minnesota State in the top five.

The national recognition adds to the Hilltoppers' growing postseason profile. West Liberty also ranks sixth in Super Region 1 in the latest NCAA Division II Football Power Index (NPI), which was released Sunday and reflects games through Oct. 24.

The Hilltoppers' latest victory featured another historic performance from senior running back Hunter Patterson, who rushed for 161 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries against Glenville State. Patterson's three scores brought his career rushing touchdown total to 43, tying Kevon Calhoun (2007-10) for the most in program history.

West Liberty has averaged 35 points per game this season while rushing for 216.6 yards per contest. The Hilltoppers have also created key defensive opportunities throughout their winning streak, including five forced turnovers in their Homecoming win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Oct. 17.

The Hilltoppers wil travel to Fairmont State on Saturday, kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
