WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Fresh off their first regional ranking in nearly two years, the West Liberty University men's soccer team returns home Wednesday night for a Mountain East Conference showdown with Point Park University (Pa.). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. under the lights at the West Family Athletic Complex.
The Hilltoppers (2-2-2, 1-1-2 MEC) enter the week ranked No. 10 in the latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Rankings. West Liberty earned the nod after upsetting Concord, last week's No. 1 regional team and the 10th-ranked squad in the nation, with a 1-0 road victory. It marks just the fifth time in program history that the Black and Gold have been regionally ranked, and the first since October 2023.
On the field, West Liberty has spread the scoring across its roster with five different players finding the back of the net so far. Travis Scandalis and Alex Watt lead the attack with two goals each, while Oskar Voges and Lachlan Quate have chipped in key playmaking in the midfield. Between the posts, goalkeeper Emil Vernhamn has been outstanding, recording two shutouts and a perfect save percentage across 184 minutes.
Point Park (2-3, 2-2 MEC) has shown plenty of firepower on offense, with six players scoring at least once through their first five matches. Ido Chalamish and Fridolin Gefrorer pace the Pioneers with two goals apiece, while goalkeeper Gregorio Capponi has made 28 saves to anchor the back line.
With both teams tied in the middle of the early-season conference standings, Wednesday night's contest has the potential to shape momentum heading into October.
