WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — Point Park (3-1-1, 2-0-0) used a fast start to defeat West Liberty (0-5-0, 0-3-0) by a 5-1 score on Sunday afternoon at the West Family Athletic Complex.
The Pioneers wasted no time grabbing the lead, as Rebecca Pihlgren scored just 10 seconds into the match off an assist from Sterre Kuijper. Maria Gomez doubled the advantage less than eight minutes later, and Point Park kept the pressure on throughout the half. Despite chances from West Liberty's Frida Lundberg and Perla Bäckberg, the visitors added a third goal in the 38th minute when Martina Cardemil finished a pass from Tatum Lucero to make it 3-0 at the break.
Point Park carried its momentum into the second half, earning three quick corner kicks before Pihlgren struck again in the 51st minute, assisted by Paula Solé. Maya Figueroa pushed the lead to 5-0 ten minutes later. West Liberty broke through in the 86th minute when Rylyn Bielinski converted a pass from Allison Callahan for her first goal of the season, but the Hilltoppers could get no closer.
Bielinski's late strike highlighted the West Liberty attack, while Callahan notched her first assist of the year. Goalkeeper Cianna Butera finished with two saves while facing 16 shots over 90 minutes.
West Liberty returns to action on Tuesday, with a road matchup at Frostburg State. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Frostburg, Md.
