Hilltoppers Fall to Bobcats on the Road

FROSTBURG, Md. — West Liberty (0-6-0, 0-4-0) was defeated by Frostburg State University (3-2-1, 1-1-1) with a decisive 6-0 scoreline at Bobcat Stadium on Wednesday. The Bobcats scored twice in the first half and added four more goals in the second half, while West Liberty's goalkeeper made 11 saves in the match.

The match between West Liberty and Frostburg commenced with Frostburg's offense testing the West Liberty defense early. Despite two offside calls against Frostburg in the opening minutes, they continued to press forward. West Liberty's goalkeeper, Cianna Butera, was active in goal, making critical saves against multiple shots, including attempts by Madison Hinton and Mary Greco. Frostburg broke through in the 15th minute with a goal by Cassidy Paige, assisted by Ainsley Wilson. West Liberty struggled to find offensive momentum, while Frostburg capitalized again when Elena Fernandez scored in the 41st minute, assisted by Jayme Sooy, leaving West Liberty trailing 2-0 by the end of the first half.

The second half saw Frostburg dominate against West Liberty, starting with Ana Davis's goal in the 55th minute, assisted by Morgan Mrizek. The Bobcats extended their lead with a penalty kick goal by Mary Greco in the 69th minute. Emma Hostetler and Abbey Robrecht each scored later in the half, both assisted by Molly Colbert, bringing the final score to 6-0. West Liberty's Butera made multiple saves throughout the half, but Frostburg's offense proved too strong.

The first half commenced with West Liberty and Frostburg competing for early control. West Liberty's Butera played a crucial role in maintaining defensive resilience, recording multiple saves, including a key stop in the sixth minute against Hinton's shot. Despite a sustained defensive effort, the Bobcats broke through with Paige scoring in the 15th minute off an assist from Wilson, putting West Liberty behind.

As the half progressed, West Liberty's defense continued to face pressure, with Butera making additional stops, notably against Wilson in the 28th minute. However, the Bobcats extended their lead with a goal by Fernandez in the 41st minute, assisted by Sooy. The half closed with West Liberty trailing 2-0, setting the stage for a critical second half.

The second half began with the Bobcats extending their lead. Despite a strong defensive effort from West Liberty, including key saves by Butera, the Bobcats broke through in the 55th minute with a goal by Davis, assisted by Mrizek.

West Liberty continued to face offensive pressure, with Butera making multiple saves, yet the Bobcats increased their margin with a penalty kick goal by Greco in the 69th minute. West Liberty created opportunities, notably with shots from Allie Callahan and Frida Lundberg, but were unable to convert.

The Bobcats sealed the match with two late goals from Hostetler and Robrecht, both assisted by Colbert, concluding the half and the match with a 6-0 advantage.

Butera made 11 saves during the game, with five saves in the first half and six in the second. Lundberg and Maya Taggart each recorded a shot on goal, adding pressure to the opposing defense. Callahan also registered a shot on goal, contributing to the team's offensive efforts.

Kayla Doty secured a clean sheet with three saves for the Bobcats. Colbert contributed significantly with two assists, bolstering the team's offensive play. Paige scored the game-winning goal, marking her presence with three shots, two of which were on target. Greco found the back of the net once and led the team with five shots, four on goal.

Looking ahead, the West Liberty soccer team will host Salem on September 28. The match is set for 1 p.m. in West Liberty, W.Va., as they continue their campaign on home turf.
