WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team will look to break into the win column this Sunday when it heads to Fairmont to face Fairmont State. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Duvall-Rosier Field.
The Hilltoppers (0-2-0) are still searching for their first goal of the young season after falling 2-0 to Seton Hill in last weekend's home opener. Despite the result, West Liberty generated eight total shots and showed steady improvement in the attacking third. Junior forward Perla Bäckberg leads the Hilltoppers with six attempts and four shots on goal, while sophomore midfielder Frida Lundberg has added a pair of shots, including one on frame.
Between the posts, sophomore goalkeeper Cianna Butera has been a busy presence, registering 17 saves in her first two starts. She posted 11 stops against Seton Hill to keep the Hilltoppers within striking distance.
Fairmont State (1-0-0) opened its season with a 3-1 home victory over Clarion on Wednesday. The Falcons struck three times in the first half, led by goals from Arrington Sparks, Montserrat Diaz, and Serenity Thomas, while goalkeeper Olivia Johnston stopped two shots to preserve the win. Fairmont controlled the run of play with a 15-5 edge in shots and 13 corner kicks.
Sunday marks the first Mountain East Conference action for both squads.
