West Liberty Set to Face Concord in MEC Semifinals

3/8/2025 9:00:00 AM

WHEELING, W.Va. – The No. 5-ranked West Liberty University men's basketball team continues its postseason run on Saturday night, facing Concord in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) semifinals. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at WesBanco Arena.

This marks the 12th consecutive MEC semifinal appearance for the Hilltoppers, who advanced with a dominant 102-77 victory over Davis & Elkins in Friday's quarterfinals. Senior guard Daniel Autrey led the way with a season-high 25 points, knocking down seven three-pointers.

Concord earned its spot in the semis after holding off West Virginia State in a 92-84 battle. Josiah Rickards paced the Mountain Lions with 19 points, leading a balanced offensive attack that saw six players reach double figures.

The teams split their regular-season meetings, each winning on the road. Concord claimed an 85-77 victory over West Liberty on Jan. 15, but the Hilltoppers responded with a convincing 102-85 win in Athens on Feb. 22. Historically, WLU has dominated the series, winning 18 of the last 20 matchups and holding a 53-32 all-time advantage.

A win on Saturday would send West Liberty to the MEC championship game for the ninth time in 12 seasons.

Coach Ben Howlett emphasized his team's focus after Friday's win: "We want to win every game we play, so tomorrow is another game—but it's a game to get into the championship, which is what we want to do. We're on a three-game mission here."
