Steubenville,Ohio - The West Liberty University women's tennis team finally had the chance to get on the court and they made the most of it winning their season opener 4-0 over Franciscan University at the Belleview Tennis Courts in Steubenville.
The Hilltoppers set the tone early with strong performances in singles play. Evelina Martirosyan led the charge, defeating Claire Cardie 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match. Omolade Aderemi followed suit with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Olivia Colby at No. 2 singles, while Gabrielle Pasco completed the sweep in singles, downing Lucy Rochat by the same 6-2, 6-2 scoreline at No. 3.
West Liberty also controlled the doubles competition, clinching victories in two of the three matches. Martirosyan and Pasco teamed up to defeat Colby and Anabel Stickney 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Aderemi and Gibson cruised past Rochat and Sophia Pastura 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. Franciscan avoided a clean sweep by taking the No. 3 doubles match, as Catherine Grubb and Hannah Franzone edged out Kylee Freeman and Mia Camilletti 6-3.
The West Liberty men's match was suspended due to darkness with the teams tied 2-2.
West Liberty tennis will now travel to Hilton Head, S.C. where they will face Chowan Saturday.
