Wheeling, W.Va. - West Liberty dominated Game One of their doubleheader against Wheeling on Tuesday, cruising to an 8-0 shutout victory in five innings behind a strong performance from pitcher Madison Angus and a balanced offensive attack.
The Hilltoppers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, striking early in the first inning. Kayla Mancuso swiped home as part of a double steal, followed by an RBI double from Sydney Johnson to give West Liberty a quick 2-0 advantage.
In the second inning, Jillian Morr extended the lead with a two-run double to center field, driving in Mancuso and Alayna Cook to make it 4-0. West Liberty's offense continued to pour it on in the third, plating four more runs. Sara Simon's RBI double and Isabella McKee's sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 6-0. Cook and Morr added RBIs later in the inning, capping off an explosive start for the Hilltoppers.
Angus (3-5) was dominant in the circle, allowing just two hits over five shutout innings while striking out one. She efficiently worked through Wheeling's lineup, inducing seven flyouts and seven groundouts to secure the run-rule victory.
Mancuso led the offensive charge, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Morr finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs, while Johns and Simon each recorded an extra-base hit. In total, West Liberty racked up 12 hits and showed patience at the plate, drawing three walks.

The Toppers erupted for 19 runs on 17 hits to secure a commanding 19-7 victory over Wheeling in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Hilltoppers responded in the second with a four-run rally. Emily Allen's RBI single tied the game, and Alayna Cook drew a bases-loaded walk to put West Liberty ahead. Jaden Conrad then delivered a two-run single to cap the big inning and give WLU a 4-1 lead.
Kadence Pettit extended the advantage in the third with a solo home run, but Wheeling answered with two runs in the bottom half to cut the deficit to 5-3.
West Liberty broke the game open in the fourth, plating eight runs on seven hits. Conrad doubled home a run, and Jillian Morr added an RBI fielder's choice. Allen followed with a two-run single before Sydney Johnson and Sara Simon each drove in runs to extend the lead. Delaney Homer and Olivia Munoz capped the explosive inning with two-RBI singles, making it a 15-3 game.
Though Wheeling pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Hilltoppers kept the offense rolling in the fifth. Lauren Nolte and Faith Randolph each drove in runs before MaKiyah Strothers and Kadence Williams added RBI singles to push the final tally to 19-7.
Pettit (7-2) went the distance for the win, striking out 10 over five innings while allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits.
The Toppers now stand at 13-14 overall on the season and 7-1 in the Mountain East Conference in first place in the north division. They will host Frostburg State in a doubleheader Saturday and Fairmont State in a doubleheader Sunday.Â
