West Liberty Softball Extends Winning Streak to Seven with Doubleheader Sweep of Frostburg State

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty Hilltoppers extended their winning streak to six games with a commanding 10-1 victory over Frostburg State in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. A relentless offensive attack and a strong outing from Madison Angus in the circle helped the Hilltoppers secure the run-rule win in five innings.

Frostburg State (8-18, 3-6) got on the board first in the opening frame on a caught stealing attempt. However, West Liberty (14-14, 8-1) wasted no time responding, putting up four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Ashlyn Tapman roped a two-run double to right field, scoring Emily Allen and Jillian Morr to give WLU the lead. Sara Simon followed with a two-run single to push the advantage to 4-1.

The Hilltoppers continued to pile on in the third inning, erupting for six more runs to put the game out of reach. Isabella McKee got things started with an RBI single before a bases-loaded walk forced in another run. Jaden Conrad and Jillian Morr each added RBIs, while Allen capped the rally with a two-run double to make it a 10-1 ballgame.

Angus (4-5) was in control, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out three in a complete-game effort. The West Liberty defense backed her up with solid play in the field, turning a key double play to keep Frostburg State from mounting a comeback.

West Liberty racked up 11 hits, with Simon (2-for-2, 2 RBI) and Allen (1-for-3, 2 RBI) leading the offensive charge. Tapman and McKee also chipped in RBIs as WLU cruised to another dominant win.

Game 2

WLU secured its seventh straight victory with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Frostburg State in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at Hilltopper Softball Complex. The Hilltoppers' strong pitching and timely hitting proved to be the difference in their latest triumph.

Kadence Pettit (8-2) delivered a dominant performance in the circle for West Liberty, going the distance and allowing just one run on four hits while striking out four. Her stellar outing kept the Frostburg State lineup in check and secured her eighth win of the season.

West Liberty (15-14, 9-1) got on the board in the third inning when Kayla Mancuso led off with a double and later scored on a stolen base attempt by Jaden Conrad, capitalizing on a defensive miscue by the Bobcats to take a 1-0 lead.

The Hilltoppers extended their advantage in the sixth when Alayna Cook came through with a clutch RBI single up the middle, driving in Sara Simon to make it 2-0.

Frostburg State made things interesting in the seventh, pushing across a run on a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 2-1. However, Pettit remained composed and induced a game-ending groundout to preserve the victory.

Offensively, West Liberty collected six hits, with Mancuso, Cook, Simon, Isabella McKee, Jaden Conrad, and Caroline Woody each contributing one. The Hilltoppers also showcased their speed on the base paths, swiping three bases in the contest.

West Liberty will host Fairmont State in a key north division battle Sunday at 1 & 3 p.m. at the Hilltopper Softball Complex.
