Kansas City, Mo. - The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) has recognized West Liberty University's men's basketball program with prestigious honors for the 2024-25 season. Head Coach Ben Howlett was named the Atlantic District Coach of the Year, while JJ Harper earned a spot on the Atlantic District Second Team.
Under the leadership of Head Coach Ben Howlett, the West Liberty University men's basketball team has achieved a remarkable 30-4 record and secured a spot in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. This marks the eighth time the Hilltoppers have reached the Elite Eight, with previous appearances in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2020, and 2023.
This season, the Hilltoppers boasted a 17-1 home record and an 18-2 conference record, clinching their eighth consecutive Mountain East Conference (MEC) regular-season championship.The Toppers also improved to 19-1 at home in NCAA tournament games. Notably, Howlett achieved his 200th career win faster than any coach in program history.
JJ Harper made a significant impact in his first season with the Hilltoppers, averaging 15.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game while helping the Toppers win the MEC regular season championship and advance to the NCAA Elite 8. For his career he now has 1,341 points and 467 rebounds.
West Liberty will meet Cal State Dom. Hills Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in Evansville, Ind. in the national quarterfinals.
