Tiffin, Ohio – The West Liberty University wrestling team made a strong statement at the NCAA Super Region 3 Championships on Saturday, with three Hilltopper standouts qualifying for the NCAA Division II National Championship in Indianapolis on March 14-15. Leading the charge was two-time national champion Ty McGeary, who was joined by James Armstrong Jr. and Khyvon Grace in securing their spots at the national tournament.
McGeary, competing at 184 lbs., dominated the competition en route to claiming the regional title and improving his season record to an impressive 30-1. He opened the tournament with a first-round fall over Vaughn Petty (Findlay) in 5:44, followed by another fall in just 2:27 against Gavin Rodriguez-Cayro (Davis & Elkins) in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, McGeary showcased his skill with an 11-2 major decision over Peyton Lemon (Ashland) before clinching the championship with a hard-fought 5-3 decision over Brayden Mirjavadi (Grand Valley State).
Joining McGeary at nationals is freshman standout James Armstrong Jr., who captured the 133 lb. title with a stellar performance. Armstrong Jr. received a bye in the opening round before edging out Ashton Anderson (Findlay) in a tight 2-0 decision. He continued his impressive run with a thrilling 9-8 semifinal win over Maximus Shore (Tiffin) and capped it off with a dominant 17-0 tech fall victory over Anthony Sagaris (Lake Erie) in the championship match. Armstrong Jr. will now take his 27-9 record to Indianapolis in search of a national title.
Khyvon Grace is now a two-time national qualifier, he secured his place at nationals with a runner-up finish at 141 lbs. Grace opened the tournament with a commanding 12-0 major decision over Cael Woods (Tiffin) and followed it up with a 4-2 decision over Caleb Brooks (Glenville State) in the semifinals. In the championship match, Grace battled but fell short in a 4-0 decision to Christian Small (Lake Erie). His strong showing ensures that he will represent West Liberty on the national stage.
In addition to the three national qualifiers, six other Hilltopper wrestlers earned podium finishes at the regional tournament. Logan Davis (125 lbs.), Anthony Wood (149 lbs.), Alec Cook (165 lbs.), Carter Winegardner (174 lbs.), and Devon Bell (197 lbs.) all secured fourth-place finishes, while Parker Bentley (285 lbs.) finished in fifth place.
With McGeary aiming for his third national title, Armstrong Jr. making a statement as a freshman, and Grace looking to improve on his seventh place finish last year, the Hilltoppers will be well-represented in Indianapolis. The NCAA Division II National Championship will take place on March 14-15.
