Hilltoppers Close Regular Season Wednesday at Wheeling

11/5/2025 9:00:00 AM

WHEELING, W.Va. — The West Liberty University men's soccer team will close out its 2025 regular season Wednesday night with a road matchup at Wheeling University. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. under the lights at Bishop Schmitt Field.

The Hilltoppers (5-8-4, 3-7-3 MEC) look to finish the year on a strong note after a hard-fought 2–1 setback at Concord on Saturday. Leandre Tyssandier netted his third goal of the season in that contest, assisted by Travis Scandalis, who continues to pace the team with 10 points (3 goals, 4 assists).

West Liberty has produced a balanced attack this fall, scoring 26 goals across 17 matches while averaging 11.1 shots per game. Alex Watt shares the team lead in points with Scandalis, tallying four goals and two assists. Leyton Collier has been a steady playmaker with three assists, while Tyssandier and E.J. Sablan each have three goals.

Defensively, the Hilltoppers have been anchored by goalkeepers Shai'ya Fitzgerald and Emil Vernhamn, who have combined for 91 saves and four shutouts. Vernhamn owns three of the team's five victories, posting a .766 save percentage.

West Liberty enters the finale sixth in the Mountain East Conference standings, ahead of West Virginia Wesleyan and Wheeling.

The Cardinals (1-14-1, 0-12-1 MEC) will also look to close the season on a positive note after dropping a 3–2 decision to Salem on Sunday. Wheeling's attack is led by Pablo Prieto and Alex Yesufu, who each have two goals this season. Goalkeeper Diego Marquez has made 50 saves across 11 starts, including a clean sheet in Wheeling's lone win—a 2–0 result at Salem earlier this fall.

These two teams battled to a 1–1 draw earlier this season on Sept. 7 at West Liberty, with Oskar Voges scoring for the Hilltoppers and Luis Bravo equalizing for the Cardinals.

West Liberty has historically controlled the series, going 6-1-3 against Wheeling since 2021, including a 5–1 win in last year's meeting in Wheeling and a 3–2 victory in the 2024 home finale.
