ATHENS, W.Va. — The West Liberty University men's soccer team came up just short on Saturday afternoon, falling 2-1 to Concord University in Mountain East Conference action at Callaghan Stadium.
Despite a strong defensive showing from goalkeeper Shai'ya Fitzgerald, who made three first-half saves, the Hilltoppers couldn't overcome a two-goal deficit. Leandre Tyssandier provided the offense for West Liberty, scoring in the 67th minute off an assist from Travis Scandalis.
The Hilltoppers started brightly, applying early pressure as Lachlan Quate narrowly missed the top right corner in the 10th minute. Tyssandier followed with a pair of dangerous attempts that were stopped by Concord keeper Nathan Scargill, keeping the match scoreless through much of the first half.
Concord broke through in the 38th minute when Malher Santi Possu found the back of the net to give the Mountain Lions a 1-0 lead. Fitzgerald came up big with several key stops to limit the damage heading into halftime.
The Mountain Lions doubled their advantage early in the second half before West Liberty mounted its response. Tyssandier's goal in the 67th minute cut the deficit in half, and the Hilltoppers continued to press forward in search of an equalizer. Scandalis and Brody Wall each generated late scoring chances, but the visitors couldn't find the back of the net again.
Tyssandier led the Hilltoppers with five shots — four on goal — while Fitzgerald finished with three saves on 14 shots faced.
West Liberty will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday, Nov. 5, with a road matchup against Wheeling. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Bishop Schmitt Field.
