WHEELING, W.Va. — The West Liberty University men's soccer team closed out the regular season in dramatic fashion Wednesday night, rallying with three second-half goals in the final 12:30 minutes to edge Wheeling University, 4–3, at Bishop Schmitt Field.
Travis Scandalis led the Hilltoppers' attack with two goals on three shots, including the game-winner with just over four minutes remaining. Alex Watt added a goal and played a key role in West Liberty's late surge, while Zachary Jordan also found the back of the net, converting his only shot of the match. Goalkeeper Shai'ya Fitzgerald made three saves in 90 minutes of action, facing 11 shots from the Cardinals.
West Liberty jumped out to an early 1–0 lead in the 11th minute when Scandalis struck first. The Hilltoppers held that advantage through halftime thanks to steady defensive play and a key save from Fitzgerald on a late Wheeling opportunity.
The second half saw a flurry of goals and momentum swings. Wheeling equalized in the 47th minute and later went ahead in the 81st, but the Hilltoppers showed impressive resilience. Watt tied the match in the 78th minute, and after the Cardinals briefly regained the lead, Jordan answered just moments later to make it 3–3.
Scandalis then sealed the comeback with his second goal of the night in the 86th minute, capping a thrilling finish and giving West Liberty its fourth goal of the match — all three of their second-half tallies coming within the final 12:30.
Up next, the Hilltoppers head to the Mountain East Conference Tournament and will face Point Park on Sunday at 4 p.m. in the MEC quarterfinals at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh.
