WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's soccer team will return home on Sunday afternoon to take on West Virginia Wesleyan in a key Mountain East Conference matchup at the West Family Athletic Complex at 3:30 p.m.
The Hilltoppers enter the contest at 2-4-3 overall and 1-3-2 in league play, looking to regroup after a midweek loss at nationally ranked Charleston. Despite the setback, West Liberty has shown steady progress through the first half of the season with two shutouts, three draws, and a balanced attack that has produced 10 goals from six different players.
Oskar Voges has been a spark up front with two goals and an assist, while Travis Scandalis and Alex Watt have also contributed two goals apiece. Midfielders E.J. Sablan and Barney Cowan have chipped in timely scores as well, and Emil Vernhamn has anchored the defense in goal, recording 26 saves and two clean sheets in five starts.
Wesleyan comes to the hilltop at 2-5-1 overall and 1-5 in conference action after battling Salem to a 1-1 draw earlier this week. The Bobcats rely on the scoring of Casey Bunker, who leads the team with two goals, and have also seen production from Erik Rostoen and Henry Coster. In goal, Matteo Marciani has posted 26 saves and two shutouts to keep his team competitive.
The series between West Liberty and Wesleyan has been tightly contested in recent years, with three of the last five meetings ending in draws. The two sides played to a 1-1 tie in West Liberty last fall, while the Hilltoppers notched a 2-1 home win in 2023.
