Hilltoppers Host Salem on Senior Day and Homecoming Saturday

10/24/2025 8:00:00 AM

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — The West Liberty University men's soccer team will celebrate Senior Day and Homecoming on Saturday afternoon when it welcomes Salem University to the West Family Athletic Complex. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

West Liberty (4-6-4, 3-5-3 MEC) enters the weekend after earning a 2-2 draw Wednesday night at West Virginia Wesleyan. Saturday's contest marks a rematch with Salem, as the two sides battled to a 3-3 tie earlier this season in Salem.

The Hilltoppers have relied on balanced scoring throughout the fall, with 12 different players contributing goals or assists. Travis Scandalis leads the team with three goals and one assist, while E.J. Sablan, Alex Watt, Ethan Nethery, and Oskar Voges have each netted a pair. Sophomore midfielder Lachlan Quate has been a steady playmaker, pacing WLU with three assists to go along with a goal of his own.

Defensively, goalkeeper Emil Vernhamn continues to impress with a .811 save percentage and two shutouts, while the Hilltoppers as a team have allowed just one goal or fewer in five of their last seven outings.

West Liberty averages 1.36 goals per match on 11.2 shots per game, while holding opponents to a nearly identical 12.1 shots per contest. Set pieces have been a key factor all season, as the Hilltoppers lead the series in corner kicks (70–84) and continue to generate chances through organized build-up play and pressure in the attacking third.

Salem (2-6-6) visits the hilltop after a 1–1 draw with Concord on Wednesday. The Tigers are led offensively by Caleb Christner, who has scored a team-high four goals and added two assists, while CJ Branch has three goals and two assists. Goalkeeper Jason Barrientos anchors the defense with a .795 save percentage and two clean sheets.

When the two programs met earlier this year, the match featured six total goals with both sides trading long stretches of momentum. Scandalis, Sablan, and Barney Cowan each scored for the Hilltoppers in that contest.
