WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — Frostburg State University defeated West Liberty University 2-0 on Wednesday at the West Family Complex.
The Bobcats took an early lead when Cassidy Paige scored in the 29th minute, assisted by Chelsea Pettyjohn. West Liberty's defense, anchored by Cianna Butera, was tested frequently, with Butera saving three shots, including a notable save against Madison Hinton's attempt at the 12th minute. Despite multiple fouls committed by West Liberty, the Bobcats maintained their offensive pressure with several shots, ending the first half ahead 1-0.
Frostburg State extended their lead early in the second half with Chelsea Pettyjohn scoring a goal in the 56th minute, bringing the score to 2-0. West Liberty's Maya Taggart had a notable attempt in the 52nd minute, but her shot was saved by the Bobcats' goalkeeper, Doty. Butera made crucial saves against Ana Davis in the 47th minute and Carly Gillette in the 78th minute to keep the margin at two. Despite several attempts from both teams, neither side could alter the score further, concluding the match with the Bobcats leading 2-0.
Butera recorded six saves, facing 24 shots and allowing two goals in 90 minutes of play. Taggart registered two shots, with one on goal.
The next challenge for West Liberty arrives on Sunday, Oct. 26, as they travel to Salem, W.Va., to face off against Salem. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m.
