WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — The West Liberty University women's soccer team returns home to the West Family Athletic Complex on Wednesday night for a Mountain East Conference matchup against Frostburg State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. under the lights.
The Hilltoppers (2-11, 1-9 MEC) are coming off a 1-1 week, highlighted by a 1-0 shutout victory over Davis & Elkins last Wednesday. Forward Perla Bäckberg continues to pace the WLU attack, leading the team with five goals and 11 points, while Maya Taggart has contributed two goals and two assists. Between the posts, Cianna Butera has started every match, compiling 108 saves—the most in the MEC entering the week.
West Liberty will look to turn the tables on Frostburg State after dropping the first meeting of the season, 6-0, back on September 24 in Maryland. The Bobcats (7-4-2, 5-3-2 MEC) enter Wednesday's contest riding momentum after a 2-0 road win at West Virginia Wesleyan. Frostburg features a balanced offense led by Mollie Rebuck (five goals, three assists) and Mary Greco (three goals, two assists), while goalkeeper Kayla Doty anchors the defense with a 0.71 goals-against average and an .828 save percentage.
The Hilltoppers average 1.08 goals per game, scoring 14 times this season on 112 total shots. WLU's defense will be tested by a Frostburg offense that ranks near the top of the MEC in goals (33) and shots per game (17.7), but West Liberty has been competitive on its home pitch, earning both of its wins this fall at the West Family Complex.
Following Wednesday's match, the Hilltoppers will visit Salem on Sunday.
