Hilltoppers Battle to 2-2 Draw at West Virginia Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — West Liberty University played to a 2-2 draw against West Virginia Wesleyan College on Wednesday at Culpepper Stadium. The Hilltoppers' offense ignited in the second half with two goals, including a tying goal that secured the draw.

Gustaf Bellander scored a goal with his only shot of the game. E.J. Sablan also found the back of the net, contributing a goal and leading the team with four shots. Emil Vernhamn made four saves during the match, facing seven shots on target. Leandre Tyssandier provided the team's only assist, aiding in the offensive efforts.

The Hilltoppers started the first half with aggressive play, marked by an early offensive attempt when Ethan Nethery took a shot in the third minute, though it sailed over the goal. Despite consistent pressure, the team was unable to capitalize on these opportunities. West Liberty's defense was tested when Erik Rostoen scored for West Virginia Wesleyan in the 18th minute, assisted by Casey Bunker, putting the visitors at a disadvantage. Vernhamn's save against a shot by Vito Stanic shortly after helped keep the score close. The half ended with the Hilltoppers trailing 1-0.

The second half saw West Liberty level the score early with a goal by Sablan in the 57th minute. Building on this momentum, Bellander, assisted by Tyssandier, put the Hilltoppers ahead with a goal in the 64th minute. However, the Bobcats responded with an equalizer by Aidan Clayton in the 74th minute, tying the score. Despite several attempts from both sides, the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

Looking ahead, West Liberty will host Salem on Saturday, for senior day and homecoming with play beginning at 1 p.m. at the West Family Athletic Complex.
