Hilltoppers Drop Road Contest at Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. — West Liberty fell to Concord University 5-0 on Saturday at Callaghan Stadium. West Liberty goalkeeper made 18 saves against the Mountain Lions' 43 shots.

 

The first half began with Concord exerting early pressure on West Liberty's defense. Cianna Butera made a crucial save in the 12th minute, denying Molly Watters' attempt to keep the score level. However, the Mountain Lions broke through with a goal by Tiana Campbell, assisted by Daisy Cook, in the 15th minute. Despite a missed penalty kick by Campbell, she quickly redeemed herself with another goal in the 21st minute, giving Concord a two-goal cushion.

 

West Liberty managed to create a chance with a shot by Maya Taggart in the 19th minute, but it went wide. The team continued to face Concord's aggressive offense, with Butera making multiple saves to prevent further damage. Rylee Stottlemyer attempted a shot late in the half, but it sailed over the top. The first half concluded with West Liberty trailing 2-0.

 

The second half began with West Liberty attempting to shift momentum through a series of corner kicks, but they were unable to capitalize. The Mountain Lions mounted significant pressure, with Cianna Butera making several crucial saves early in the half, including stops against shots from Tiana Campbell and Ella Rowell. However, Concord broke through with a goal by Daisy Cook in the 63rd minute, extending their lead.

 

West Liberty continued to face intense offensive pressure from the Mountain Lions, with Butera maintaining composure in goal despite repeated attempts. Stephanie Tovar scored for Concord in the 71st minute, further widening the gap. The Mountain Lions' Molly Watters added another goal in the 79th minute, sealing the half for the home team. The period concluded with West Liberty unable to make a comeback, ending with a score of 5-0 in favor of Concord.

 

Cianna Butera recorded an impressive 18 saves, facing 43 shots throughout the match. Rylee Stottlemyer managed to take a shot, contributing to the team's offensive efforts. Maya Taggart also attempted a shot, adding to the attacking play.

 

Looking ahead, West Liberty will host Frostburg State Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the West Family Athletic Complex.
