Hilltoppers Host Davis & Elkins in Midweek MEC Showdown

10/15/2025 8:00:00 AM

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — The West Liberty University men's soccer team returns home to the West Family Athletic Complex on Wednesday evening for a Mountain East Conference matchup against Davis & Elkins. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.

The Hilltoppers (3-5-3, 2-4-2 MEC) look to bounce back from a narrow 2-1 road loss at Point Park last week. Sophomore Leyton Collier scored his first goal of the season in the match, while goalkeeper Emil Vernhamn continued his strong play in net with multiple key stops.

West Liberty enters the contest averaging 1.36 goals per game while holding opponents to 1.73, with a balanced attack featuring eight different goal scorers this season. Alex Watt, Travis Scandalis, Ethan Nethery, and Oskar Voges share the team lead with two goals each, while Lachlan Quate and Collier have paced the midfield with three assists apiece. Between the posts, Vernhamn boasts a .839 save percentage and two shutouts in five starts.

The Hilltoppers will have a tall task against a red-hot Davis & Elkins side (6-2-3, 5-1-2 MEC), which enters on a four-match winning streak and sits third in the conference standings. The Senators have allowed just eight goals in 11 matches, led by goalkeeper Charlie Phillips, who owns a 0.73 goals-against average and six shutouts. Offensively, Chinedu Ikem and Francisco López Kreik have powered the attack with four goals each, while Hugo Fauli has distributed a team-best six assists.

The two teams played to a 2-2 draw earlier this season in Elkins, with Scandalis and Voges finding the back of the net for the Hilltoppers. West Liberty will look to build on that effort and pick up valuable points as the conference schedule enters the stretch run.
