WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — The West Liberty University women's soccer team continues Mountain East Conference play on Sunday, traveling to Institute, W.Va., to take on division-leading West Virginia State at 1 p.m.
The Hilltoppers (1-9-0, 0-7-0 MEC) look to bounce back after a 4-1 setback against Glenville State on Wednesday. Frida Lundberg netted her first goal of the season in that match, while goalkeeper Cianna Butera recorded nine saves, bringing her season total to 78 — among the most in the MEC.
West Liberty has been led offensively by Perla Bäckberg, who tops the team with four goals and 10 shots on goal this fall. Holly Brighton and Abby Kightlinger have each added a goal and two assists, while Maya Taggart and Emma Lieu have provided key playmaking support with two assists apiece.
The Hilltoppers' attack will be tested against a strong West Virginia State (7-3-0, 7-1-0 MEC) squad that sits atop the MEC South Division. The Yellow Jackets have won three straight, including a 4-1 road victory at Point Park on Wednesday. Leila Karam leads the WVSU offense with seven goals, while Sara París Fílter and Laura Pouedras have combined for eight assists.
In goal, Poppy Bastock anchors the Yellow Jackets' defense with four shutouts and a 0.774 save percentage.
West Liberty will look to replicate its last victory in Institute, a 2-1 win during the 2023 season.
