West Liberty, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's soccer team hits the road Wednesday to face Charleston at 7 p.m., looking to gain ground in a tough Mountain East Conference matchup.
The Hilltoppers (2-3-3, 1-2-2 MEC) enter the contest coming off a 3-3 tie at Salem, trying to turn some close games into wins. West Liberty has scored 10 goals in eight games while allowing 14, with senior forward Oskar Voges leading the team with five points. Travis Scandalis and Alex Watt each have four points. In goal, Emil Vernhamn has posted a 0.66 goals-against average in relief, complementing starter Shai'ya Henry, who has played the majority of minutes.
Charleston (6-0-2, 4-0-1 MEC) is unbeaten in eight games and has been one of the conference's top teams. The Golden Eagles have scored 13 goals while giving up only two, with Martin Echarren leading the way offensively and Tomas Petrungaro contributing both goals and assists. Charleston has been solid defensively, allowing just 0.25 goals per game and recording six shutouts.
Historically, the series has been dominated by Charleston, as West Liberty has struggled to find success against the Golden Eagles. The Hilltoppers are just 1-12-0 in the series, with their lone victory coming in the 2017 home opener, a 2-0 win. Since then, Charleston has won 12 straight, including a 4-0 victory in the most recent matchup last October at Charleston and a 2-0 win at West Liberty earlier in the same season.
