Hilltoppers and Tigers Set for Sunday Afternoon Battle

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The West Liberty University men's soccer team will be on the road Sunday morning, heading to The Bridge Sports Complex in Bridgeport, West Virginia. The match against the Salem University Tigers is scheduled to kick off at 2:00 p.m.

WEST LIBERTY STORYLINES:

  • Head Coach Sean Regan enters his 6th season at the helm of the Hilltopper men's soccer program

  • Coach Regan enters his 16th season overall as a college Head Coach 

  • West Liberty was picked fourth in the Mountain East Conference Men's Soccer Preseason Poll 

  • The Hilltoppers 2023 MEC postseason run came to a close in quarterfinal play against the Senators during the 2023 season.. 

  • Sophomore forward Zachary Forehard drove home the first goal of the season for the Black and Gold in the season opener at Ohio Dominican 

  • The Hilltoppers fell to the Senators at home in their Mountain East Conference opener at West Family Athletic Complex. The Senators netted a late second half goal to take the match, 2-1

  • Concord topped WLU in their next outing in Athens, West Virginia 

  • The Hilltoppers were on the attack early on with Linus Ebet driving a shot-on-target towards the net, but Mountain Lion goalkeeper Nathan Scargill made an impressive save to keep the match scoreless in the 14th minute of the first half 

  • Aidan Harveylooked to get the Hilltoppers on the scoreboard in the 71st minute with his first shot-on-goal attempt of the season but was saved by the Mountain Lions goalkeeper Nathan Scargill. Concord went on to win the match, 4-0 

 

SALEM STORYLINES:

  • Salem finished the 2023 season with an overall record of 2-12-3 

  • Salem has netted six goals through three matches this season 

  • The Tigers opened up the 2024 fall slate with a loss at home to PSAC member Millersville

  • Salem netted two goals on the day but wasn't enough to overcome the Marauders 

  • The Tigers won their second match of the season over Shaw, 4-1 

  • In their first MEC match of the season, Davis & Elkins blanked Salem, 4-0 





 

SERIES HISTORY:

The Hilltoppers and Tiger have met a total of four times dating back to the fall of 2017. WLU and Salem split victories in the first two matches. Last season's meetings ended in a draw on both occasions. 

 

UP NEXT:

The Hilltoppers return to non-conference action in their next outing. West Liberty welcomes California (Pa.) to West Family Athletic Complex on Wednesday, September 18. The Vulvans and Hilltoppers are set for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff under the lights on the West Liberty campus.
