West Liberty’s Upset Bids Fall Short at No. 15 Charleston

Charleston, W.Va. – In a battle of the only two remaining undefeated teams in Mountain East Conference play, it was No. 15 Charleston who outlasted West Liberty by scores of 4-2 and 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the UC Softball Field. The Hilltoppers had the Golden Eagles on the ropes in both games as they erased an early three run deficit in game one to claw back within one midway through the contest, and then in game two it was a scoreless battle until UC secured the win in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • Kayla Mancuso opened the game with a leadoff double and both Sydney Johnson and Sara Simon reached on fielder's choices to load the bases with no outs, however Charleston would get out of the top of the first inning unscathed.
  • The Golden Eagles were the first to put a run on the scoreboard as a throw down to third got away for the Hilltoppers, allowing the runner to turn and cross the plate to make it a 1-0 game in the bottom of the first.
  • UC forced WLU to go 3-up, 3-down in both the top of the second and third innings before they extended their lead in the bottom of the third. Charleston scored one run on a ground out to third base and another on a single down the left field line to make it a 3-0 game.
  • West Liberty clawed back within a run in the top of the fourth inning as they scored two runs off four hits. They started the frame with back-to-back singles by Mallory Rosnick and Jaden Conrad before a slow rolling single towards the right side of the infield by Kieran Johnson brought home Olivia Munoz who pinch ran for Rosnick. The ensuing at-bat Isabella Caruso knocked a single to shallow right field to score Conrad to cut the deficit to 3-2.
  • In each team's next two batting attempts they left one runner stranded, before the Golden Eagles concluded the scoring in game one with a run in the bottom of the sixth. UC's run occurred on a single to left field which advanced the runners to second and third. The throw into third base was then mishandled which allowed for the runner to continue home and make it a 4-2 ball game.
  • The Hilltoppers tried to spark a rally in the top of the seventh inning as they got a leadoff single to right field from Carlee Leidy, however that would be their only hit of the inning as UC forced a ground out and a pair of strikeouts to end the game.

  • The Hilltopper defense had to fend off the Golden Eagle offense early as they forced UC to leave a pair of runners stranded in the bottom of the first and three in the bottom of the second.
  • WLU's first runner in scoring position came in the top of the fifth inning as Jaden Conrad hit an infield single to the shortstop, and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Harris. The inning came to a close as UC forced a strikeout and ground out.
  • West Liberty's final opportunity at the plate started with a leadoff single up the middle by Sara Simon, however the Hilltoppers would be unable to get a runner in scoring position as Lauren Nolte was caught stealing second after pinch running for Simon.
  • Charleston ended the game in walk-off fashion with the lone run of the game coming on a solo shot over the left field fence on just the second pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning.
