Hilltoppers and Bobcats Battle to Draw

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va.  – The West Liberty University women's soccer tallied a late second half goal to force a draw with West Virginia Wesleyan in Mountain East Conference action in Buckhannon, West Virginia.

Team Records: West Liberty 2-5-2 (1-3-2 MEC), W.Va. Wesleyan  3-4-2  (1-3-2 MEC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Junior Hilltopper forward Mia Zecca looked to build on her outstanding offensive performance from her last outing with a shot-on-goal attempt sixty second into the match but the shot  was saved by Bobcat goalkeeper Paige Miller 

  • The Bobcats scored  first with a goal in the 16th minute. West Virginia Wesleyan defender Tessa Grisez pushed a shot past Hilltopper goalkeeper Ciana Butera off a feed from Kameron Bonneau

  • The Hilltoppers maintained urgency after the Bobcat goal, rattling off five more first half shots that either went wide of were blocked before the teams went to halftime 

  • The Hilltoppers returned from halftime with four more shots in the opening six minutes of the second half 

  • The Bobcats maintained their one-goal lead into the final ten minutes of play but that Hilltopper attack was ready for a final push 

  • As the clock passed the 81st minute of play Senior midfielder Morgan Kost pushed a ball to some open space near the corner that found fellow Hilltopper Maya Taggart 

  • Taggart split the Bobcat defender outside the eighteen before setting a beauty to the back post that found forward Ellie Cunninham for the Hilltopper goal. Cunningham's third of the season

  • Espiritu, Alexander and Kost attempted shots in the closing minute but the match reached full time in a draw 

 

UP NEXT:

Road action continues for the West Liberty women's soccer team next week. WLU travels to Glenville, West Virginia Wednesday October 9th for a conference matchup against Glenville State. Kickoff between the Hilltoppers and Pioneers is set for 7:00 p.m.
