West Liberty Scores Late to Force Draw with Wheeling

West Liberty, W.Va. – After falling behind 2-0 early in the second half the West Liberty University women's soccer team clawed their way back into the match and earned a 3-3 draw with Wheeling on Sunday afternoon. The Hilltoppers scored their first two goals of the match less than 30 seconds apart and swung the momentum in their direction, but both teams went on to score once in the final 20 minutes of game time to battle to a tie.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wheeling struck first in the 22nd minute, with Mary DiFonzo scoring on a penalty kick goal. The Cardinals then extended their lead to 2-0 in the 56th minute as Medina Doka found the back of the net off a pass from DiFonzo.
  • West Liberty's first goal of the game came in the 64th minute as Maya Taggart found Morgan Kost for her fourth goal of the season.
  • Less than 30 seconds after the Hilltoppers got on the board, Amelia Compston placed a penalty kick goal past the keeper to even the game at two goals apiece.
  • WU regained the lead in the 74th minute as Talynn DeBartolo scored to make it a 3-2 match.
  • The relentless Hilltopper attack knotted the game back up at three goals apiece ten minutes later in the 84th minute, as Mia Zecca collected the ball and placed a shot that bounced down off the top cross bar and into the net.
  • West Liberty held the advantage in shots (25-14), shots-on-goal (13-7), and corner kicks (6-2) while Wheeling held a 10-4 edge in saves.
