Hilltoppers Face Frostburg State in First MEC Road Test

West Liberty, W.Va. – The West Liberty University football team will hit the road for their first MEC road match-up of the season as they face Frostburg State on Saturday afternoon in Frostburg, Maryland. The Hilltoppers and Bobcats are set for a 1 P.M. kick-off at Bobcat Stadium.

WEST LIBERTY STORYLINES
  • West Liberty enters Saturday's game with an 0-2 (0-1 MEC) record on the season following a 42-29 loss to Fairmont State in their home opener last week.
  • The West Liberty offense is averaging 25.0 points per game with 394.0 passing and 34.0 rushing yards per game, accumulating an average 428.0 yards of total offense through two games. The Hilltopper offense has scored six touchdowns through the air and one on the ground during the season.
  • The Black & Gold have one of the top passing attacks in the country as Rudy Garcia leads the MEC and ranks second nationally in both total passing yards (788) and passing yards per game (394.0) through two games.
  • The Hilltoppers top two wideouts rank first and second in the conference in total receiving yards and receiving yards per game as Rashawn Harvey has total 301 yards and averaged 150.5 yard per game while Chris Charles has hauled in 191 receiving yards and averaged 95.5 yards per game. Harvey ranks third nationally in total yards and fourth in yards per game, while Charles ranks 28th and 26th respectively.
  • The wide receiver duo of Harvey and Charles also ranks one and third in the league in receiving touchdowns with four and two respectively, and also ranks third and 28th in DII.
  • On the defensive side of the ball WLU has accumulated 109.0 tackles with 14.0 tackles-for-loss and 1.0 sack. The Hilltopper defense has forced one turnover on the year, a fumble recovery against Fairmont State in week two.
  • Trent Crawford and Bre'Andre Horsley lead the defensive unit with 15.0 and 14.0 tackles this season. Horsley leads the team with 4.0 tackles-for-loss and has 0.5 sacks with DaJuan Jones which resulted in a Falcon safety last week. Taison Fa'Asuamanu recovered the Fairmont State fumble for the lone turnover of the season.
  • West Liberty has converted 18-of-37 (48.7%) third down attempts compared to 11-of-27 (40.7%) for their opponents. The Black & Gold are 3-of-4 (75.0%) on fourth down attempts while their opponents have not attempted one yet in two games. In the red zone the Hilltoppers are 4-of-6 on the season while their opponents are 5-of-7.
  • Roger Waialae is in his 19th season as the head coach at West Liberty with a career record of 92-102 with the Hilltoppers. Waialae is currently the longest tenured coach in the MEC and holds the second most wins all-time in WLU football history.
FROSTBURG STATE STORYLINES
  • Frostburg State enters Saturday's game with a record of 2-0 (1-0 MEC) following last week's 20-16 win over Wheeling.
  • The Frostburg State offense is averaging 23.5 points per game with 199.0 passing and 169.0 rushing yards per game, accumulating an average 368.0 yards of total offense through two games. The Bobcat offense has scored two touchdowns through the air and three on the ground during the season.
  • At quarterback for FSU is Graham Walker who has completed 34-of-53 passes for 398 yards and two touchdowns this season. His top targets at wideout are Jeremiah Gibson and Jamil Bishop who have hauled in six receptions for 127 yards and touchdown, and ten receptions for 110 yards respectively. He also found Amari N'namdi-Hall for a passing touchdown.
  • On the ground Frostburg State has two running backs who have rushed for 100 yards on the season with Sean Aaron leading the way with 124 yards and three touchdowns. Devin Thompson has added 101 yards rushing.
  • On the defensive side of the ball FSU has accumulated 97.0 tackles with 11.0 tackles-for-loss and 3.0 sacks. The Bobcat defense has intercepted five passes this season.
  • Colby Street leads the defensive unit with 14.0 tackles, 0.5 tackles-for-loss, and one interception. Both Leonard Scott and Rashaan Simpson have recorded 3.0 tackles-for-loss on the yar.
  • Frostburg State has converted 12-of-29 (41.4%) third down attempts compared to 12-of-30 (40.0%) for their opponents. The Bobcats are 2-of-3 (66.7%) on fourth down attempts while their opponents are 1-of-5 (20.0%) in two games. In the red zone FSU is 6-of-9 on the season while their opponents are 4-of-7.
