Hilltoppers Fall to Malone in Season Opener

Canton, Ohio – The West Liberty University women's soccer team got their season off to a quick start with a pair of goals in the opening 11 minutes of action, however it wouldn't be enough on Thursday night as Malone earned a 3-2 season opening win. The Pioneers were able to tie the game going into halftime and scored the game-winning goal halfway through the final half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It only took one minute and 39 seconds for West Liberty to get on the scoreboard, as Mia Zecca scored off a double assist from Abigail Barki and Amelia Compston to put the Hilltoppers on top 1-0.
  • Malone answered to tie the game at one just minutes later in the 6th minute with an unassisted goal by Teegan Graff.
  • The fast paced offensive attack continued in the opening minutes as Amelia Compston placed the ball in the top right corner of the net off an assist from Mia Zecca, giving WLU the early 2-1 advantage.
  • Teegan Graff scored her second goal of the game in the 33rd minute, beating the WLU goalkeeper to the ball in the box and placing a high arcing shot in the open net.
  • The Pioneers scored the game winning goal in the 64th minute with a goal by Morgan Ross, assisted by Reagan McCourt, shortly after MU stopped a shot-on-goal and corner kick for WLU.
  • Malone held the advantage in shots 13-6, shots-on-goal 9-4, and corner kicks 6-4.
