Hilltoppers Travel to Concord in First MEC Tournament Appearance Since 2018

West Liberty, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team will be playing their first game in the Mountain East Conference Women's Soccer Tournament since 2018 when they travel to face Concord on Sunday afternoon. The quarterfinal match-up between the Hilltoppers and Mountain Lions is set for 1 p.m. at the Paul Cline Sports Complex in Beckley, West Virginia.

WEST LIBERTY STORYLINES
  • West Liberty enters Sunday's match with a record of 7-7-4 (5-6-3 MEC) on the season following a 5-1 win at Wheeling in Wednesday's regular season finale. The win gave the Hilltoppers their seventh win of the season, the most in program history after previously notching six wins on five different occasions.
  • The Hilltoppers clinched third place in the MEC North Division standings after being picked to finish fifth in the preseason. The Black & Gold will make their third all-time appearance in the Mountain East Conference Women's Soccer Tournament and first since 2018. West Liberty is 0-0-2 in their previous two appearances with both match-ups being decided by penalty kicks. In 2018 WLU advanced to the semifinals following a 0-0 draw with Fairmont State when they won 7-6 on penalty kicks.
  • As announced on Friday afternoon, two Hilltoppers received All-MEC recognition as Jori Alexander and Amelia Compston were both named All-MEC Honorable Mention.
  • Compston has broken three WLU single-season records down the stretch in the regular season as she has recorded nine goals, five assists, and 23 points on the year. She was tied for seventh in assists and points, and tied for eighth in goals in the Mountain East Conference.
  • Morgan Kost added eight goals on the year and tied for second in the conference with four game-winning goals. Kost is the only player in WLU history to record multiple multi-goal games in a single season, with two against Salem and West Virginia State.
  • Eight other Hilltoppers have found the back of the net in 2023, with Mia Zecca (6), Asia Espiritu (4), Isabella Aperfine (4), Katie Farley (3), Maya Taggart (3), and Ellie Cunningham (2) each scoring multiple goals.
  • Compston was one of 12 players to record an assist for the Black & Gold this season and is joined by Aperfine and Taggart who are second on the team with three while Farley, Kost, Zecca, and Rileigh Gualtiere have each collected a pair of assists.
  • Overall, four players have reached double digit points as Compston leads the way with 23 (9 goals, 5 assists), and is followed by Kost with 18 (8 goals, 2 assists), Zecca with 14 (6 goals, 2 assists), and Aperfine with 11 (4 goals, 3 assists).
  • Zara Wickert has started 15 games in goal for West Liberty and has made 16 appearances on the season, totaling 1,371 minutes of playing time while making 97 saves on 274 shots faced. Wickert has posted a 0.789 save percentage and a 1.71 goals-against average while recording three shutouts. She currently ranks second in the conference in total saves and is third in saves per game (6.06). Wickert has notched three double digit save performances this season.
  • Through 18 matches West Liberty has held the advantage over their opponents in goals (42-31), assists (25-19), shots-on-goal (143-141), corner kicks (84-76), and saves (109-101) while their opponents hold the edge in shots (304-254).
  • The Hilltoppers have set program records for most goals (42), assists (25), and points (109) in a season.
CONCORD STORYLINES
  • Concord enters Sunday's match with a record of 11-5-2 (10-4-1 MEC) on the season following a 2-0 win at Glenville State in the regular season finale.
  • The Mountain Lions finished second place in the MEC South Division standings and will host an Mountain East Conference Women's Soccer Tournament game for the sixth consecutive season as they make their sixth all-time appearance in the tournament.
  • Concord landed a total of seven players on the All-MEC teams announced on Friday afternoon as Olivia Bekeleski and Reeanna Cook led the way with All-MEC First Team honors. Lotte Fasen, Olivia Shollenberger, and Alexa Todd were each named to the All-MEC Second Team, while Emma Ring earned All-MEC Honorable Mention. Wilma Hedenberg and Fasen were both named to the All-MEC Freshman Team.
  • Sydney Tucker leads the team with ten goals and is tied for sixth in the MEC. Cook has found the back of the net seven times this season with three being game-winners, while Todd has scored six goals.
  • Nora Voisey leads the team and is second in the conference with eight assists. Todd, Michelle Brogden, and Leah Fleming have each added five assists.
  • Tucker leads the team with 22 points (10 goals, 2 assists) while Cook with 18 points (7 goals, 4 assists) is one of seven other players with double digit points.
  • Sarah Pattillo has played in 11 matches while making ten starts for CU this season, totaling 892 minutes while making 28 saves on 75 shots faced. She has posted a .757 save percentage and 0.91 goals against average. She ranks third in the MEC in goals against average.
  • Through 18 matches the Mountain Lions have held the advantage over their opponents in goals (58-19), assists (42-11), shots (348-157), shots-on-goal (183-81), and corner kicks (115-48) while their opponents hold the edge in saves (123-62).
  • Luke Duffy is in his eighth season as the head coach at Concord with a career record of 95-37-17 during his time with the Mountain Lions.
