Hilltoppers Look to Continue Momentum in Return to MEC Play

West Liberty, W.Va. – The West Liberty University volleyball team will return to Mountain East Conference action on Friday evening as they travel to Frostburg State in a North Division match-up. The Hilltoppers and Bobcats are scheduled for a 7 p.m. first serve in Bobcat Arena in Frostburg, Maryland.

WEST LIBERTY STORYLINES
  • West Liberty enters Friday's match with a record of 14-4 (3-0 MEC) following a sweep of Salem on Tuesday evening. The Hilltoppers are in sole possession of first place in the North Division of the Mountain East Conference standings.
  • Through 18 matches this season WLU is hitting .199 while averaging 12.2 kills, 11.2 assists, 1.6 aces, 16.6 digs, and 1.6 blocks per set.
  • As a team, West Liberty ranks within the top-10 of NCAA Division II in four statistical categories, ranking third in the country in total digs (1,197), fourth in total attacks (2,575), seventh in total kills (875), and eighth in total assists (808).
  • Katelynn Fritz and Ashley Cudnik lead the attack for West Liberty, totaling 188 and 129 kills on the season and averaging 2.72 and 2.63 kills per set respectively.
  • Dakoda Keni has been among the top setters in the country throughout the season, having tallied 546 assists which is third in the MEC and is 38thth nationally. Keni has the third most total assists by a freshman in DII this season and has been averaging 7.58 assists per set.
  • Bella Dart leads the Black & Gold at the service line, recording 31 service aces on the season which is 26th in DII and is third in the conference. Dart is averaging 0.46 aces per set. Nyia Setla is second on the team, adding 25 aces on the year.
  • Setla, the leader of the West Liberty defense, has collected 353 digs on the season, which is the second most in the MEC and fifth in NCAA Division II. She is also second in the conference and 40th nationally with 4.90 digs per set.
  • In Tuesday's match against Salem, Setla became only the third player in program history to reach the 2,000 career dig mark.
  • Grace Hill leads the Hilltoppers at the net, totaling 53.0 blocks while ranking third in the conference, and is averaging 0.91 blocks per set. Page Gross has added 32.0 blocks and is averaging 0.56 blocks per set.
  • Riley Jarrett is in her fourth season as the head coach at West Liberty with a career record of 63-34 with the Hilltoppers.
FROSTBURG STATE STORYLINES
  • Frostburg State enters Friday's match with a record of 8-9 (0-3 MEC) on the season following a 3-1 loss at home to Wheeling on Tuesday evening.
  • Through 17 matches this season FSU is hitting .172 while averaging 11.5 kills, 10.6 assists, 2.0 aces, 15.3 digs, and 1.6 blocks per set.
  • The Bobcat attack is led by Beverly Braun who has totaled 207 kills while averaging 3.29 kills per set. Amanda Knieper has added 102 kills and AJ Thompson has 100, averaging 2.08 and 1.75 kills per set respectively.
  • Hayley Delor has collected 581 assists on the year, ranking 25th in NCAA Division II and second in the MEC. She also leads the team with 23 service aces this season, while Braun has added 21.
  • Fiona Gonzalez Medina is the leader defensively for Frostburg, totaling 286 digs which ranks 24th nationally and third in the conference. She is averaging 4.54 digs per set. Delor and Braun have also reached 100+ digs this season, tallying 193 and 155 respectively.
  • At the net Paige Mock leads Frostburg State with 50.0 blocks, averaging 1.06 blocks per set.
  • Kylie Heyne is in her fourth season as the head coach at Frostburg State with a record of 33-55 during her time with the Bobcats. Overall, she is in her ninth season as a collegiate head volleyball coach, spending the previous five years at Davis & Elkins. She holds a career record of 102-139 during her time at FSU and D&E.
SERIES HISTORY
  • West Liberty is 8-0 against Frostburg State since they joined the MEC prior to the start of the 2019 season.
  • Last year the Hilltoppers reverse swept the Bobcats on September 30 in Frostburg, Maryland. WLU then won in straight sets on October 28 in the ASRC.
