Hilltoppers Conclude Non-Conference Action on Halloween Night against Salem

West Liberty, W.Va. – The West Liberty University volleyball team will play their final non-conference match-up of the season as they are set to face Salem on Halloween night (Tuesday, October 31) in the ASRC. The Hilltoppers and Tigers are set for a 7 p.m. first serve.

WEST LIBERTY STORYLINES
  • West Liberty enters Tuesday's match with a record of 19-7 (8-3 MEC) following a 3-1 home loss to West Virginia State on Friday night, which snapped their 5-game win streak. The Hilltoppers are in sole possession of second place in the North Division of the Mountain East Conference standings.
  • Through 26 matches this season WLU is hitting .187 while averaging 12.1 kills, 11.2 assists, 1.7 aces, 16.8 digs, and 1.7 blocks per set.
  • The Hilltoppers rank within the top-25 of NCAA Division II in four statistical categories, ranking eighth in total digs (1,701), tenth in total attacks (3,640), 24th in total assists (1,128), and total kills (1,219).
  • Katelynn Fritz is among the top-10 of the individual leaders in the MEC with 266 total kills which is ninth most in the league. She is averaging 2.71 kills per set with a .179 attack percentage.
  • Liv McAtee and Leah Driscoll are second and third on the team respectively with 210 and 194 kills. McAtee has notched 2.23 kills per set with a .222 attack percentage, while Driscoll has collected 2.66 kills per set and has a .193 attack percentage.
  • Dakoda Keni has been among the top freshman setters in the country this season, having tallied 799 assists which is third in the MEC and is the eighth most by a freshman in DII. Keni has been averaging 7.91 assists per set, which is fifth best in the conference.
  • Bella Dart and Nyia Setla lead the Hilltoppers at the service line, recording 36 and 33 service aces respectively to average 0.40 and 0.33 aces per set.
  • Setla, the leader of the West Liberty defense, has collected 499 digs on the season, which ranks second in the MEC and is the eighth most in DII. She is also second in the conference and 34th nationally with 4.94 digs per set.
  • Grace Hill leads the Hilltoppers at the net and ranks fifth in the league with 84.0 total blocks and an average of 0.99 blocks per set. Page Gross has added 52.0 blocks and is averaging 0.60 blocks per set.
  • Riley Jarrett is in her fourth season as the head coach at West Liberty with a career record of 68-37 with the Hilltoppers.
SALEM STORYLINES
  • Salem enters Tuesday's match with a record of 5-19 and has lost nine consecutive matches following a loss in straight sets to West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday.
  • Through 24 matches this season SU is hitting .087 while averaging 9.0 kills, 7.3 assists, 1.7 aces, 13.3 digs, and 1.6 blocks per set.
  • Noemi Combi leads the Tiger attack with 190 kills on the season, averaging 2.38 kills per set and a .169 hitting percentage.
  • Valentina Poti and Nakyia Middleton have also recorded over 100 kills on the year with totals of 155 and 148 respectively, as Poti is averaging 2.67 kills per set and a .115 attack percentage while Middleton averages 1.92 kills per set and a .182 attack percentage.
  • McKenzie Clyncke is the top setter for Salem, totaling 354 assists on the year, averaging 4.37 assists per set. She is one of 11 players in DII this season to record a triple-double with a 15 assist, 12 kill, and ten dig performance in a 5-set loss to Frostburg State on October 24th.
  • At the service line, three players have a total of 20 or more aces as Mikaela McEvoy leads the team with 28 while Kayla Holbrook and Clyncke have added 21 and 20 respectively.
  • Defensively the Tigers are led by Alayna Cox with 322 digs, averaging 3.98 digs per set.
  • At the net, Middleton has tallied a team-high 65.0 total blocks for an average of 0.84 blocks per set.
  • Matt Carpenter is in his first season as the head coach at Salem with a career record of 5-19 during his time with the Tigers.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Since 2014 West Liberty holds a 9-0 advantage in the series and has won 26 consecutive sets dating back to set three of the September 23, 2014, match-up.
  • In the first meeting this season the Hilltoppers decisively swept the Tigers on the road on October 3 with set scores of 25-7, 25-19, and 25-9.
